Northwest Lancaster County River Trail

Northwest Lancaster County River Trail has trailheads in Falmouth and Columbia, Pennsylvania. A 14-mile trail, it runs along the Susquehanna River. Sights depend on where you are along the trail, but it features beautiful farmland and stunning river views. The trail is open daily during daylight hours and features a meeting place called Riverfront Park, where hikers, walkers, runners, and skiers can meet to mingle.

Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail-Trail

Created along a former railway, the Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail-Trail runs from, as the name implies, Lititz in Warwick Township to Ephrata. The trail is just over 7 miles long and connects the three historic downtown areas of Lititz, Akron, and Ephrata. It features convenient parking areas, lit pathways, and even fun amenities along the trail. The farmers market, less than half a mile away, offers a selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and baked goods to rejuvenate you along the route.

Conestoga Trail

The Conestoga Trail is an extensive 63-mile trail system that stretches through Lancaster County and begins in the Furnace Hills. It features both human-made paths and natural surfaces, including some steep, rocky slopes. Parts of the trail are known to be strenuous and may be ideal for advanced hikers, but the result is well worth it. After climbing the challenging hills, you can experience a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River. As part of the Pinnacle Scenic Overlook Nature Preserve, this trail connects with other popular trails along the Susquehanna River.

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area

The Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area contains 6,000 acres of preserved conservation land that's home to multitudes of geese and waterfowl. As it's designated as a wildlife refuge, the area is closed to foot and vehicle traffic throughout the winter months. It opens in spring to welcome visitors and hikers who can enjoy many hiking trails, each of which caters to a different experience level. Take it easy along the fully paved and level Willow Point Trail or enjoy a challenge taking on the 8-mile horseshoe trail.

Pinnacle Scenic Overlook Nature Preserve

Pinnacle Scenic Overlook Nature Preserve is a conservation area that offers incredible views of the Susquehanna River. It features nearly three miles of moderate to difficult hiking trails, including the popular Conestoga Greenway Trail. The area is known for its steep cliffs, jutting rocks, and densely forested areas. Pinnacle Scenic Overlook Nature Preserve nestles against Kelly's Run Nature Preserve, another popular Lancaster County hiking destination.

Reed's Run Nature Trail

Reed's Run Nature Trail is ideal for leisurely hikers, walkers, and joggers. The paved trail is just over 2.5 miles long and offers views of the Susquehanna River, surrounding woodlands, and native wildlife. It's located near Pequea, Pennsylvania, and its difficulty level is rated moderate. Although visitors can brave the trail any time of year, it's recommended for use during the spring and summer months. Dogs are welcome on Reed's Run Nature Trail as long as they remain leashed.

Enola Low-Grade Trail

Formerly known as the Atglen-Susquehanna Trail, the Enola Low-Grade Trail is a nearly 29-mile trail that runs in split segments throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. As a rail trail, it follows a now-defunct branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad railway. The trail runs through many local townships, and each maintains its own section of it. Some have rougher terrain, while others are more suitable for beginners. The trail consists entirely of crushed limestone, which allows for good traction.

Lancaster County Central Park

Lancaster County Central Park is the largest park in Lancaster County. Spanning 544 acres, it's home to multiple walking, running, hiking, and biking trails. Visitors can enjoy relaxing stops along the way, like recreation areas open parks ideal for resting or celebrating special occasions. Besides hiking trails, Lancaster County Central Park features equestrian trails and designated areas for cross-country skiing. Whether you prefer the trails on horseback, skis, or your own two feet, you're bound to find a trail you enjoy at Lancaster County Central Park.

Kelly's Run Nature Preserve

Kelly's Run Nature Preserve is a conservation area that features Kelly's Run Trail, a notoriously difficult path for experienced hikers. An extension of the Conestoga Trail, Kelly's Run Trail is a nearly 4-mile loop covering steep, challenging terrain. The trail has rock scrambles and creek crossings that intimidate novice hikers and tempt the more seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. Like Conestoga Trail, Kelly's Run Trail offers access to the famous Pinnacle Overlook, which gives hikers unbeatable views of the Susquehanna River. On their way to the overlook, hikers can enjoy views of the wildlife, including wooded areas, native animals, and wildflowers.

Texter Mountain Nature Preserve

Texter Mountain Nature Preserve is a conservation area with a maximum height of more than 1,100 feet, making it the highest point in Lancaster County. Home to Texter Mountain, the preserve also features Harnish Run, a trail loop that tours the lowlands of the preserve from east to west. Old logging roads make up a significant portion of the trail, which still features some of the area's declining ash tree population. It's a great hike for adventurers who enjoy a mountainous hiking experience with some steep and rocky terrain and shallow creek crossings.
